Teams with leaf blowers and sweepers are out and about clearing up fallen leaves. Every corner of the municipality will be covered. Each week, we focus on a different neighbourhood in Apeldoorn. We do not clear leaves that have fallen outside the designated routes. If leaves cause a hazardous situation,\u00a0please report this<\/a>.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

In some places, we leave the leaves where they are<\/h2>\r\n

In some places, where it poses no danger, we\u2019ll leave the leaves where they are. This year, we\u2019ll be doing this in more places than you\u2019re used to. You\u2019ll soon see more leaves lying around, particularly in flowerbeds and green spaces. We\u2019re doing this to provide insects and small animals with a place to hibernate. Furthermore, the leaves are important for healthy soil. Leaves form a vital insulating layer that plants need to survive a harsh winter. Healthy soil is also more resistant to drought and heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n

What do you do with your leaves?<\/h2>\n

You can help by sweeping the pavement and driveway. If you sweep the leaves to the side of the road, we\u2019ll collect them when we pass by. In your own garden, it\u2019s best to leave the leaves where they are as much as possible. \u00a0Small animals and insects overwinter under the leaf cover, and it also protects your plants from frost. Another advantage is that soil organisms automatically break down the leaves into nutrients for the soil, meaning less compost is needed.<\/p>\n

Would you rather not have leaves in your garden? You can also put your leaf waste in the green bin. This is emptied free of charge.<\/p>\n

Bokashi Soil Conditioner<\/h2>\n

Some of the leaves that we do clear away because they\u2019re lying on roads and paths are put to good use. We use them here to\u00a0Bokashi<\/a>\u00a0a soil improver. Bokashi is a type of compost made from fermented leaf litter. Just like leaves, it provides nourishment for the soil life around trees, shrubs and in public gardens.
