Quality architecture<\/h2>\r\n

In Apeldoorn, in 2024, we will be protecting buildings or groups of buildings that best tell the story of the period 1970\u20131990. Anyone arriving by train, taking a stroll through the city centre or driving straight through the city will see it straight away: there was a great deal of building in Apeldoorn between 1970 and 1990. It was a period in which the city was allowed to grow by 75,000 extra residents. To provide homes for all these new residents, the city was expanded to include, amongst other areas, Zevenhuizen and De Maten. De Maten grew to become one of the largest neighbourhoods in the Netherlands: by around 1990, more than 30,000 residents of Apeldoorn were already living there.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t just a matter of expansion: more buildings were also erected in the city, particularly in the city centre, where a wave of demolition had taken place in the 1960s. More than a decade later, these new projects have restored the city centre to its welcoming character, as exemplified by the former Buining mansion, which now houses flats and shops.<\/p>\n

Research into the Post-70 heritage shows that the architecture from this period in Apeldoorn is of a high standard. The city boasts some particularly notable examples in the field of office buildings, such as the \u2018De Heeze Office Block\u2019 on Christiaan Geurtsweg by architect Tido Wiarda, who has designed several remarkable buildings in Apeldoorn. The neighbourhoods also feature valuable housing developments, such as the \u2018Versprongen woningen\u2019 in De Maten and the \u2018De Zeis-De Haarhamer\u2019 residential estate in De Heeze.<\/p>\n

From stock-taking to designation<\/h2>\n

In 2021, we began a survey of the architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture from the period 1970\u20131990. The council wanted to know which buildings, neighbourhoods, public spaces and green spaces best tell the story of Apeldoorn from this period. We are doing this to prevent valuable recent heritage from being demolished or radically altered. In this way, we can preserve Apeldoorn\u2019s identity and ensure the city remains recognisable. Residents of Apeldoorn contributed their ideas on which buildings belong in the \u2018Apeldoorn collection\u2019.<\/p>\n

The research into recent heritage has resulted in the report \u2018Apeldoorn Post70\u2019. This report tells the story of Apeldoorn between 1970 and 1990, and sets out which buildings and groups of buildings have been selected for the longlist and the shortlist. The properties on the shortlist were then assessed in more detail for their cultural-historical value.<\/p>\n

Eight buildings or groups of buildings were designated as municipal monuments in 2024, and two as municipal landmark buildings. In addition, five types of housing in seven residential neighbourhoods have been designated as municipal protected town or village views. Municipal monuments<\/h2>\r\n

Designating a building as a listed monument prevents major alterations or demolition. If you are planning to carry out renovation work on a listed monument, you will usually need a planning permission.<\/p>\n

Landmark buildings<\/h2>\n

We believe it is important to preserve the original appearance of these buildings or groups of buildings as much as possible. If you wish to demolish a landmark building, you will need a planning permission.<\/p>\n

Listed town and village views<\/h2>\n

Protected town and village landscapes are unique and highly valuable because of their origins. This is often reflected in the layout of the area, the buildings, the roads and the green spaces. The municipality of Apeldoorn has three nationally protected townscapes: De Parken, Hoog Soeren and Radio Kootwijk, and three municipally protected town and village landscapes: the Indische buurt, the Metaalbuurt and Wiesel. In 2024, five protected areas were added to these, bringing the total to seven, including the Versprongen houses in De Maten and the De Wiekelaar residential neighbourhood in Loenen. Also, the post-war reconstruction area Kerschoten<\/a> was designated a protected townscape in 2024. If you wish to demolish a building or structure within a protected townscape, you will need an environmental permit.<\/p>\n

Environmental Plan<\/h2>\n

Over the coming years, we as a local authority will be working on the environmental plan. For the post-70 housing estates, we will set out in the environmental plan how we will deal with matters such as building regulations, green spaces and public spaces.<\/p>\n
