Residents, businesses and other stakeholders provided feedback on this during an information evening on 25 June 2026. This feedback is currently being assessed and incorporated into the final design. The current plan is to start work in the second half of 2027.<\/p>\n<h2>Why are measures needed?<\/h2>\n<p>Kanaal Zuid is a key route for residents, businesses and freight traffic travelling to and from Eerbeek and Loenen. At the same time, issues relating to road safety and quality of life have been a concern for some time, and serious road accidents occur regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the layout of the road, drivers tend to drive faster than is desirable in some places. Local residents are also experiencing disruption from the traffic. Independent research shows that reducing the speed limit to 60 km\/h, combined with changes to the road layout, offers the best way to improve road safety and quality of life on and around Kanaal Zuid. The study will also examine the effects on traffic in the surrounding area, including the N786 through Loenen.<\/p>\n<h2>Connections with other roads in the area<\/h2>\n<p>Kanaal Zuid forms part of a wider traffic issue in the Eerbeek-Loenen area.<\/p>\n<p>On various roads in the area, residents and road users are experiencing problems relating to road safety, quality of life and accessibility. This applies, amongst others, to the N786, which runs through Loenen, and to the road alongside the Apeldoorns Canal.<\/p>\n<p>Measures taken on one road have an impact on traffic on other roads. That is why the Province of Gelderland and the municipalities of Apeldoorn and Brummen are looking not just at individual roads, but at the overall transport system in the area. The main measures are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of the speed limit from 80 to 60 km\/h.<\/li>\n<li>Narrower lanes with a clearer layout.<\/li>\n<li>Paving along the verge where possible.<\/li>\n<li>Traffic calming measures that help to reduce speed.<\/li>\n<li>Improvements to junctions to enhance road safety.<\/li>\n<li>A uniform design for the entire Canal Route.<\/li>\n<li>A safe solution whereby cyclists use alternative routes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div data-acfblock=\"Tekst\" class=\"section a section--blue e-tekst\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row justify-content-center elementOnTop\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col article-content__content-custom-1220 editor elementOnTop\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<h2>What has happened so far?<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\n<li>In collaboration with the Province of Gelderland and the Municipality of Brummen, plans have been drawn up for the redevelopment of the Kanaalroute.<\/li>\n<li>A design has been drawn up for Kanaal Zuid. On 25 June 2026, this draft was discussed with local residents, businesses and other stakeholders during a well-attended information evening. The feedback received during the evening will be assessed and incorporated into the final design.
