The NIKA method sets out the minimum requirements for these measures. These NIKA values consist of two parts.<\/p>\n<p>The first section consists of five core values;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>water storage<\/li>\n<li>greenery at ground level<\/li>\n<li>tree planting<\/li>\n<li>facilities for animals kept indoors<\/li>\n<li>wind comfort<\/li>\n<li>These fundamental principles are the same for everyone; there is no choice in the matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second part consists of three categories of variable values;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>biodiversity<\/li>\n<li>green roofs and green fa\u00e7ades<\/li>\n<li>climate adaptation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Further information on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apeldoorn.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/NIKA-rapport-digitaal-toegankelijk-1.pdf\">NIKA \u2013 Developing and implementing policies for nature-inclusive and climate-adaptive development and construction (pdf, 2 MB)<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Application<\/h2>\n<p>NIKA applies when we are going to carry out construction work and a spatial plan needs to be drawn up for this purpose. A distinction is made between large and small-scale development projects. NIKA applies in full to large-scale development projects, whilst only the variable values apply to small-scale development projects.<\/p>\n<h2>NIKA applies in the following cases:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>New construction projects;<\/li>\n<li>Addition of a storey (building an extra storey onto an existing building);<\/li>\n<li>Change of role<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Grant scheme<\/h2>\n<p>There is a grant scheme for large-scale new-build developments that meet the NIKA criteria. In addition, 70% of the homes must be affordable. To this end, the\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/lokaleregelgeving.overheid.nl\/CVDR722306\/1\">NIKA Apeldoorn grant scheme<\/a>\u00a0drawn up.
