Submitting and registering a certificate

If an event has taken place abroad and a certificate has been issued, you can register it in the Netherlands in the Personal Records Database (BRP). The certificates often need to be translated or legalized first.

 
What to bring
  • A valid identity document.
  • Original foreign documents that meet the required conditions.

The following certificates can be registered in the BRP: 

  • Birth certificate 
  • Marriage certificate or registered partnership certificate 
  • Divorce certificate 
  • Death certificate

What to Bring to Your Appointment 

  • A valid passport or ID card (your own). 
  • A valid passport or ID card of your partner (a copy is also allowed). 
  • The certificate you wish to register. It must be in Dutch, English, German, or French. If necessary, you can have it translated by a sworn translator. 
  • Your certificate must have the correct legalization or apostille. You can check the necessary steps on the Netherlands Worldwide website
  • Registering a marriage certificate? If you or your partner do not have the nationality of an EU country, you must bring a Declaration of Registration. Use the form: Declaration (pdf, 86 kB). 

Registering a certificate in the BRP is free of charge. 

The documents you submit will be reviewed by the municipality and, if necessary, sent to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for further verification. You will receive written notification within 4 weeks on whether your documents can be collected. You can then schedule an appointment online. 

For collection, bring: 

  • Your proof of submitted documents. 
  • A valid identity document. 

Certificates must be collected in person.
