DigiD, Your Digital Identity
In the Netherlands you need DigiD in order to identify yourself online and log into websites of the government institutions, such as municipality, Sociale Verzekeringsbank, as well as the Tax and Customs Administration. You may also use DigiD to log into websites of hospitals, pharmacies or health insurance companies
Apply for DigiD
In order to apply for a DigiD account you need to enter your citizen service number (BSN) and your date of birth. Your citizen
service number, which you have obtained during your registration at the municipality, consists of 9 digits. You also need to enter
your house number and the postal code of the address where you are registered. If you are staying at a municipality shelter, you
need to enter the house number and postal code of the shelter address for your application.
- Visit www.digid.nl.
- Click on ‘Apply or activate’ (‘Aanvragen of activeren’).
- Click on ‘Digid Application Form’ (‘Aanvraagformulier DigiD’) at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter your date of birth, postal code and house number and click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).
- Create a username and password and fill them in. It is required to enter your password twice.
- Enter your phone number and e-mail address, then click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).
- You will receive an SMS containing a code. Enter this code and click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).
- You have also received an e-mail containing a code at the e-mail address that you had provided earlier. Enter this code and
click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).
You have applied for a Digid account. Within three working days you will receive a letter by post. You can activate your Digid
account by entering the code in the letter, your username and password. Please note: activate your DigiD within 21 days.
Activate DigiD
- Visit www.digid.nl.•
- Click on ‘Apply or activate’ (‘Aanvragen of activeren’).•
- Click on ‘Digid Application Form’ (‘Aanvraagformulier DigiD’) at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter your date of birth, postal code and house number and click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).•
- Create a username and password and fill them in. It is required to enter your password twice.
- Enter your phone number and e-mail address, then click on ‘Next’ (‘Volgende’).

Your Digid account has been activated. From now on, you can log into websites of the Dutch government institutions.
DigiD app
The DigiD app is the easiest way to log safely. You will not need to remember a complex password, only enter the PIN code that
you have chosen yourself. Download the DigiD app via Google Play or the Apple App Store. Firstly, you need to activate the app.
- Open the app and click on ‘Activate’ (‘Activeren’)
- The DigiD app will ask if you already use the app on another device. Choose ‘No’ (‘Nee’).
- Enter your DigiD username and password, then click on “Next” (‘Volgende’).
- Create a PIN code and enter it. Repeat your PIN code. From now on, you should log into the app using this PIN code.
- The DigiD app will ask if you want to activate an ‘ID-check’ (‘ID-check’). If you use an iPhone, click on ‘Start scan’
(‘Start scannen’). If you use an Android, the scan will start directly. Wait for 10 seconds. The app will then offer an option to
skip the scan. Click on ‘Skip the scan’ (‘Scan overslaan’). - You will receive an SMS containing a 6-digit code. Enter the code in the DigiD app.
- You see two orange sliders on the screen now. Leave them on.
- Enter your e-mail address, if you have not done this earlier, then enter the verification code that has been sent to your e-mail address.
You have activated your DigiD app and can use it directly.
