If you are getting married abroad, foreign authorities may request either a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage or a Certificate of Unmarried Status. These are different documents:

  • Certificate of Unmarried Status: This is an extract from the Personal Records Database (BRP) that confirms your marital status. You can request this from your municipality of residence or from an RNI municipality if you live abroad.
  • Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage: This confirms that you and your partner meet the legal requirements to marry under Dutch law. It includes the personal details of both partners. You only need this certificate if the municipality where you are getting married requests it.

To apply, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You live in Apeldoorn or Apeldoorn was your last place of residence in the Netherlands.
  • You or your partner has Dutch nationality.

Start your application via the orange button above. After submitting the completed form, the municipality will contact you within three working days. For issuing the certificate, the municipality will check original documents. You can either make an appointment at the city hall or send the required documents by post.

Required Documents

  • Copy of a valid passport or ID card (for both partners).
  • Birth certificate (only if born outside the Netherlands).
  • Extract from your municipality of residence, stating your marital status and nationality.
  • Proof of dissolution of a previous marriage, if applicable.

Important:

  • Only original certificates are accepted. Legalization may be required.
  • Documents must be in Dutch, English, French, or German. Otherwise, they must be translated and legalized.
  • Visit Netherlands Worldwide for more details on legalization.

The certificate of no impediment to marriage costs €29.80.
