Tackling grid congestion

Grid congestion means that the electricity grid is sometimes overloaded. This happens when, at certain times, we use or feed back more electricity than the grid can cope with. For example, when lots of solar panels are feeding electricity into the grid at the same time on a sunny day.

Our approach

By using energy wisely together, we help reduce the strain on the electricity grid. In this way, we are working towards a sustainable future in Apeldoorn with enough electricity for everyone. The council is taking various measures to help alleviate and resolve grid congestion.

Space for cables, transformer boxes and batteries

The local authority is helping Liander and TenneT to expand the electricity grid. We are working closely together to achieve this. We are ensuring that space is set aside in the city for the cables, pipes and 500 extra electricity kiosks to allocate a space. This is necessary to prevent power cuts and to ensure that everyone continues to have a reliable supply of electricity.

A smarter energy system

But we are also looking into how we can build a smarter energy system in Apeldoorn. For example, by using district heating networks as an alternative to electric heating, energy storage in batteries and car batteries, or smart electricity grids in business parks, such as at the Ecofactorij.

Electrical connections for new-build properties

Together with the RVO and the network operator, the local authority is helping to set priorities for applications for electricity connections required for future new-build projects. For example, the local authority plays a role in applying for grid capacity at an earlier stage.

Spreading energy consumption

By using energy sensibly, you too can make a contribution. Use electricity during off-peak hours as much as possible. These are usually between 11.00 and 17.00 and between 21.00 and 07.00. In this way, we can spread our energy consumption throughout the day. This reduces the strain on the electricity grid and helps prevent power cuts. This ensures that Apeldoorn will continue to have a sufficient supply of electricity in the future. Visit Energy of Apeldoorn what else you can do yourself.

  • The platform Partners in Energy brings together market players and business organisations to foster collaboration in the energy sector.

Partners

In addition to the local authority, various parties are involved in resolving grid congestion and dealing with this blockage in the electricity grid: RVO, TenneT, Province of Gelderland, Liander, VNG.
