In Apeldoorn, we want to make the city greener and cooler, especially as summers are getting hotter. With our new plan, ‘Trees in the city – how cool is that?’, we’re planting more trees. Trees provide shade and help to cool the city by evaporating water. This ensures the city remains a pleasant place to live.
Sometimes we do have to fell a tree. This may be because the tree is no longer safe or has almost stopped growing. In that case, it is better to plant a new tree so that there will be more leaves. We inspect our trees regularly in accordance with national regulations. If the trees committee gives its approval, we apply for a felling permit.
We often plant a new tree when we fell an old one, but that can sometimes take up to a year. We plant trees during the planting season and first make sure the site is ready for a new tree to grow. We try to combine different tasks to save time.
Trees sometimes need to be felled as part of construction projects too. When this is the case, local residents are sent a letter informing them of this, and an application is made for a felling permit.
If there isn’t enough space for a new tree where the felled tree stood, we’ll look for another spot.
