In the Netherlands, you need a DigiD. This allows you to identify yourself online and log in to government websites, such as those of the local council, the Social Insurance Bank and the tax authorities. You can also use your DigiD for hospitals, pharmacies or health insurance.

Apply for a DigiD
To apply for a DigiD, you will need your citizen service number (BSN) and date of birth. The citizen service number
It has 9 digits and was issued to you when you registered with the local authority. You will also need the house number and postcode of the address at which
You are registered. If you live in a municipal accommodation centre, you must provide the house number and postcode of this
Please specify the location when making the application.
- Go to www.digid.nl.
- Click on the ‘Apply or activate’ button.
- Click on the ‘DigiD application form’ button at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter your date of birth, postcode and house number, then click the ‘Next’ button.
- Think of a username and a password, and enter them. You must enter your password twice.
- Enter your telephone number and email address, then click the ‘Next’ button’
- You will now receive a code via text message on your phone. Enter this code and click the ‘Next’ button.
You have also received an email at the email address you provided. The email contains a code. Enter this code and click the ‘Next’ button.
You have applied for your DigiD. You will receive a letter by post within 3 days. You can activate your DigiD using the code in the letter, your username and your password. Please activate your DigiD within 21 days.
Activate DigiD
- Go to www.digid.nl and click on ‘Apply or activate’.
- Click on the ‘Enter activation code’ button.
- To activate your DigiD, enter your username and password. Click on the ‘Log in’ button.
- You will receive an SMS code on your mobile phone. Enter the code and click the ‘Next’ button.
- Enter the code shown in the letter. Click on the ‘Activate’ button.
Your DigiD is active. From now on, you can log in to government websites using DigiD.
DigiD app
The DigiD app is the easiest way to log in securely. You no longer need to remember a complicated password.
Just a PIN that you choose yourself. Download the DigiD app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. The app must first
be activated.
- Open the app and tap ‘Activate’.
- The DigiD app will ask whether you are already using the app on another device. Select ‘No’.
- Enter your DigiD username and password, then tap ‘Next’.
- Choose a PIN and enter it. Repeat the PIN. You will use this to log in from now on.
- The app will ask if you want to activate it using an ‘ID check’. Do you have an iPhone? If so, tap ‘Start scanning’. On an Android device, scanning starts straight away.
- Wait 10 seconds. The app will then give you the option to skip the scan. Tap ‘Skip scan’.
- You will receive a text message containing a 6-digit code. Enter this code in the DigiD app.
- You will now see two orange sliders. Leave them switched on.
- Please enter your email address if you haven’t done so already. Then enter the verification code that has been sent to your email address
has been sent.
Your DigiD app is now activated. You can start using it straight away.
