Reporting identity fraud

Have you posted a copy of your passport on, for example, Marktplaats, a property website or a job site, but you’re not sure about it? Or have you already noticed that your copy has been misused to defraud other people in your name? If so, please report this to the Central Identity Fraud Reporting Centre (CMI)

If your passport is involved in a case of identity fraud or a data breach, we recommend that you apply for a new passport. As we can, in consultation with you, immediately retain your current passport when you submit your new application, this reduces the risk of identity fraud.

Fraud involving a copy of your document

Many organisations ask for a copy of your ID, even though checking your passport, identity card or driving licence is often sufficient. You should therefore always ask why the copy is needed. Never simply send a copy of your ID as part of an online purchase or sale.

However, there are organisations which are legally obliged to receive all your details. These include your employer, bank or solicitor. Is a copy necessary? If so, ensure that any irrelevant details are crossed out and that the purpose and date of the copy are stated. This will help protect the copy from potential misuse.

Never lend your ID to anyone either. Did you know, by the way, that this is a criminal offence for both the borrower and the lender?
