Berg en Bos Nature Park is a valuable green space in the city of Apeldoorn. The park is important for people seeking peace and quiet and a connection with nature, but also as a habitat for numerous plants and animals, including some very rare species.
In order to protect and manage the park effectively, it is very important to have a clear understanding of its biodiversity. Between 2019 and 2023, volunteers and staff from Apeldoorn Council carried out an extensive survey of the animal species in Berg en Bos Nature Park. This survey mapped virtually all species groups, from large game to moths. Plants and trees have not yet been surveyed; this is planned for 2025.
During the study period, a total of 645 species were recorded, including 51 rare and protected species. A selection of these remarkable finds includes: the rhinoceros beetle, the stag beetle, the blueberry bee, the black heath dragonfly and the comma butterfly. The data collected shows that it is vital to improve the connectivity between small areas housing unique species. This helps to foster the development of strong and resilient populations.
The report highlights the beauty and diversity of Berg en Bos Nature Park, whilst emphasising the importance of small-scale and careful management. It reveals vulnerabilities, such as the life cycle of the stag beetle, which depends on specific conditions. The knowledge gained can be used to protect nature even more effectively. Furthermore, the report demonstrates just how indispensable the work of volunteers is in the conservation and management of our natural environment.
