The Municipality of Apeldoorn is a partner in the Clean Rivers Alliance. We support the Clean Rivers Alliance’s ambition: plastic-free rivers in the Netherlands by 2030.
We are actively contributing to solutions to achieve this and, together with Schone Rivieren, are calling for urgent action to ensure a comprehensive approach at source:
Clean Rivers is a programme run by IVN Nature Education, which was launched in 2017 in collaboration with the Plastic Soup Foundation and Stichting De Noordzee. Together with thousands of volunteers, Clean Rivers maps plastic pollution in the Netherlands, cleans it up and tackles the problem at source. On schonerivieren.org You can find more information about Schone Rivieren’s activities and campaigns here.
In our municipality, we want to raise residents‘ awareness of water pollution. That is why, in 2025, tiles bearing the words ’The IJssel begins here‘ and ’The stream begins here’ were installed at 100 locations. With these tiles, Apeldoorn is drawing attention to the consequences of litter in water. Cigarette ends, plastic and other litter that ends up in street drains and sewer manholes eventually find their way into rivers and oceans. That is why a hundred tiles have been placed at strategic locations across Apeldoorn. For example, along the Grift.
“Rubbish in the water doesn’t just affect nature. It also affects people and ultimately pollutes our drinking water.”
