Exhibition by Verenigde Apeldoorners on display at the Theehuis from 9 July

Clubs and societies have long played an important role in Apeldoorn. Even before official clubs and societies existed, residents were already working together. For example, the men of the Burger Oranje Compagnie protected the local area, and farmers banded together to defend their interests. From 1848 onwards, residents were granted the right to set up associations. This led to the establishment of, amongst others, the Tourist Office, the First Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Bathhouse and the Hospital.

Sport and culture bring people together

Around 1900, many choral societies, libraries and sports clubs were founded. After the Second World War, community life flourished. Many residents were members of a club or society. It was also during this period that Orderbos Sports Park acquired its distinctive layout, bringing together sport, events and nature.

New ways of meeting each other

From the 1960s onwards, society began to change. People had more free time and started making different choices. Yet the need to socialise remained. As a result, the carnival in Knienenburg grew into a well-known tradition, and the De Klup Foundation became a model for inclusive leisure activities for people with disabilities. These days, people also connect via WhatsApp groups, sports apps such as Strava and online communities. Despite these changes, Apeldoorn still has a rich and active community life.

Practical information

The ‘Verenigde Apeldoorners’ exhibition will be on display from 9 July 2026 to 10 January 2027 at the Tea House in Berg en Bos City Park. Admission to the exhibition is free during the park’s opening hours. In the summer, the park is open daily from 07.00 to 21.00. Berg en Bos City Park is located at J.C. Wilslaan 21 in Apeldoorn.
