Exhumation and reburial/cremation of mortal remains

The conditions for obtaining permission to exhume and reburial or cremation are:

• The person’s remains are buried in a cemetery in the municipality of Apeldoorn.
• You are the person entitled to the grave in which the remains are buried. Has the person entitled to the grave passed away? If so, please first contact Contact the cemetery administration.
• There is a minimum grave rest period of 10 years. This grave rest period begins from the date of the last person to be buried in the grave. After this period, it is permitted to exhume the remains and reburial or cremate them. This grave rest period does not apply to the exhumation of an urn.

Once the remains have been exhumed, it is compulsory to reburial or cremate them. This does not apply to an urn. You may also take the urn home with you, for example to scatter the ashes.

Will the remains be exhumed from one of our municipal cemeteries?

We need the plot number of the plot where the remains are buried. You can look up this plot number at grafzoeken.nl

Are the remains buried in a private cemetery? This is a cemetery that is not managed by the municipality of Apeldoorn.

– Proof demonstrating that you are the rightful owner of the grave.
– Proof that you have obtained permission from the cemetery administrator to exhume the remains. This must state the date of exhumation.

Will the remains be cremated after the exhumation?

– A document confirming the cremation issued by the crematorium. This document states the date of the cremation.

This proof is not required in the following situation: The remains are buried in a municipal cemetery and are to be cremated at Heidehof Crematorium.

– Memorial at the current grave
If there is a memorial on the grave from which the remains or the urn are to be exhumed, you have the following options:

1. Have the memorial removed by us. There is a charge for this; please see the price list under the section ‘Restoration of the memorial’.
2. Removing the memorial itself. There is no charge for this.
