Exemption from the ban on lighting fires

Lighting a fire or burning materials in the open air is not automatically permitted. In some cases, you may be granted one-off permission to do so. You must apply for an exemption at least three weeks in advance, and only if you meet the conditions.

You will be granted an exemption if the fire is used exclusively for the following purposes:

  • traditional peace or Easter bonfire
  • campfire
  • New Year’s Eve fireworks
  • a fire to burn infected, diseased wood. Staatsbosbeheer sometimes checks whether the wood is actually diseased.

Each exemption is subject to specific conditions, such as the distance from trees or buildings. The conditions depend on the location, size, nature and purpose of the fire. The conditions are always set out in the exemption.
