Sluisoord-De Mheen Vitality Programme

Sluisoord and De Mheen were largely built in the 1960s and 1970s. Around 11,600 people live there. It is a very mixed neighbourhood with terraced houses, detached houses and flats. The local amenities are good. There are various schools, shops, sports facilities and places of worship. And residents enjoy Mheenpark.

Social cohesion

A large proportion of the residents enjoy living here. Relations with neighbours are generally good. However, people do need a good place to meet up. They also need activities that allow them to socialise or play sport together.

There are many people with care needs living in certain streets. For example, in the Gentiaanflats. This requires extra attention.

Housing and sustainability

Many homes in Sluisoord and De Mheen are not very well insulated and are not energy-efficient. A great deal has already been done to address this in recent years. However, there is still a lot to be done. The housing associations are working on this. And residents can take steps themselves, with help from the local council.

Traffic and transport

There are dangerous road junctions in some places. There are also occasional parking problems. Furthermore, people lack access to public transport. Work is being done to address these issues.

Outdoor space

Most residents are satisfied with the upkeep of the outdoor areas. There are, however, some areas for improvement. For example, litter on the streets, or a lack of greenery. Some streets are in a state of disrepair. These will be refurbished in the coming years.

Safety

Generally speaking, people feel safe in the neighbourhood. However, there are certain places that feel unsafe – for example, because groups of people are loitering there. It is important that we work together to make the neighbourhood safe and keep it that way.

Working together for the neighbourhood

Together with local residents and a range of organisations, we’re going to work to keep the neighbourhood in good shape. We’ve drawn up a plan of action setting out the steps we’ll be taking.

Agenda

The following areas will receive extra attention in the coming years. First and foremost, we are working to improve social cohesion in the neighbourhood. We will also be focusing on sustainability. We are looking at how we can resolve issues relating to traffic and transport. Where necessary, we will improve public spaces, for example by introducing more green spaces and reducing litter. And we are committed to ensuring a safe neighbourhood with less nuisance.

Objective

Who

Effective collaboration between neighbourhood professionals

Social organisations in the neighbourhood are consulting with one another more often. This helps them to work together more effectively in the neighbourhood.

Neighbourhood Team/Samen055

Supporting great ideas from local residents

We help to support residents’ ideas. For example, plans for car-sharing. Or a graffiti project with young people.

A good meeting place

Residents would like to see more places where people can easily meet up, and where they can take part in activities. We’re currently looking into where this would work best.

Healthy neighbourhood

We’re looking at ways to help people of all ages live healthier lives. For example, by making it easier to take part in sport in the neighbourhood.

Don Bosco in the neighbourhood

Don Bosco is being given a temporary home in Zevenhuizen. In due course, it will move to a permanent location at 1005 in Sprenkelaar.

Sustainable rental properties

We are going to make rental properties more sustainable. They will be well insulated. Where appropriate, solar panels will be installed. The streets concerned are Boterbloem, Teunisbloem, Helmbloem, Hoefblad, Tormentilstraat, Melissestraat, Wijnruitstraat and Kruizemuntstraat.

Helping new tenants get settled

New tenants of social housing are offered a welcome meeting. This helps them get settled. We are also looking into whether follow-up meetings could be arranged for residents of the Gentiaanflats.

More parking spaces at Zilverschoon

We are looking into how parking arrangements at the meeting point on Zilverschoon can be improved.

Local Authority, Samen055

Less litter

We’re taking action together to tackle litter. For example, we organise clean-up campaigns with the local community. And we provide information in more languages. That way, everyone can get involved.

Green neighbourhood

We’re looking into whether the green spaces around the Gentiaanflats can be tidied up.

Safe Gentian Area

We are working with a range of organisations to tackle nuisance issues in the Gentiaan area. For example, we are looking at crime, litter, noise pollution and safety concerns.

Objective

Action/Point for attention

Who

A more comfortable home and lifestyle in the Gentiaanflats

Many people living in the Gentiaanflats have concerns. Every year, we draw up a neighbourhood plan to improve the situation. We’re going to get started on that.

Neighbourhood Team

Redevelopment of Korianderplein/De Mheen

We are drawing up a plan for the development of Korianderplein and the De Mheen shopping centre. There may also be some new homes built there.

Municipality

A sufficient supply of suitable housing

We are drawing up plans for the construction of new rental and owner-occupied homes. In this way, we are creating more housing. The homes will be built on Deventerstraat, Hoornbloem and on the site of the Theresiakerk, amongst other locations. As part of the building plans, we are also considering other aspects, such as community spaces and local care provision. We are also looking into whether we can carry out maintenance or refurbishment of the streets at the same time.

Local authorities, housing associations, developers

Sustainable heating

We are investigating whether homes can be heated sustainably. For example, using waste heat from businesses, or heat from water.

Municipality

Art on electricity sub-stations

We’re looking into whether the electricity substations can be spruced up. For example, with art or historical images.

Liander, local authority

Safer roads

We are creating safe crossings on Laan van Zevenhuizen. This will make it easier for people to travel back and forth between Sluisoord-De Mheen and Anklaar-Sprenkelaar

Municipality

Beautiful Mheenpark

There is a new management plan for Mheenpark. The play area and picnic area are being redesigned. And the area around the skate park and tennis court is being refurbished. The paths are being upgraded and a wide circular path will be created. In addition, a work of art will be installed in the park – something the residents have been asking for.

Municipality

Alternatives to public transport

Residents miss having public transport. We provide information on alternative transport options, such as car-sharing schemes. And we encourage plans for other forms of transport, such as shared taxis.

Local authority, neighbourhood team

Refurbished streets

We will soon be starting major maintenance work in the area around Tormentil, Venkel and Kruizemuntstraat. As part of this, we will be carefully considering the ideas and questions raised in the neighbourhood survey.

Municipality

No shopping trolleys in the neighbourhood

We are making arrangements with shopkeepers to collect shopping trolleys in the neighbourhood.

Anklaar shopkeepers, neighbourhood team

Deterring criminals

Drugs are sold in some places. We want to make those places less attractive to drug dealers.
