De Maten underground high-voltage connection

The high-voltage pylons and power lines in the Maten area are to be removed. They will be replaced by an underground high-voltage connection. We are doing this to improve the quality of life in the neighbourhood. We expect work to begin in early 2027.

In the spring of 2022, the Municipal Executive commissioned a project to bury the high-voltage power lines in De Maten. National grid operator TenneT has drawn up a basic design. The new underground high-voltage power line will follow the existing route of the overhead high-voltage power lines almost entirely. Once the cables have been laid and the new connection has been commissioned, the overhead high-voltage power lines and pylons will be removed and demolished.

An extraordinary discovery

During the archaeological excavation at the IJsseldijk, a remarkable discovery was made: the remains of a main building with an annex. No artefacts or other finds have been uncovered that directly indicate the period to which the buildings date. Samples are therefore being analysed to determine the age of the remains. In doing so, we are examining, for example, any traces of seeds and charcoal that may be found in the samples. Based on their initial observations, the archaeologists suspect that the remains date from the Bronze Age.

De Maten: Neighbourhood of the Future

But there’s more to come in the neighbourhood over the next few years! We’re set to work on De Maten as one of the ‘Neighbourhoods of the Future’. We’re looking at how the neighbourhood can make the transition to sustainable heating. This transition, together with the undergrounding of the high-voltage power lines, is important for the vitality of De Maten.

The project consists of four phases:

  1. Feasibility study phase: The feasibility study has been completed. TenneT has investigated whether the high-voltage power lines can be laid underground and has selected a suitable route.
  2. Basic design phase: The basic design was then drawn up. The chosen plan was developed in technical detail and assessed. It is now clear where the cables will be laid underground.
  3. Detailed design phase: The project is currently at this stage. TenneT is finalising the route for the underground cables. The design is now detailed enough to reach agreements with landowners and users, apply for planning permission and amend the local development plan. We are also continuing to prepare for the works.
  4. Implementation phase: At this stage, we award the contract to a contractor and suppliers. Work can then begin. The cables are laid underground by trenching or drilling. Once the cables are in place, they are connected to a manhole or a substation. Once the underground connection has been thoroughly tested, it is put into service. The old overhead connection is then removed. This phase takes approximately 24 months.

The energy transition is in full swing. During the transition to renewable energy, we must ensure that everyone has sufficient electricity. That is why network operators are investing in strengthening and expanding the electricity grid. This may lead to delays in this project. We will keep residents, businesses and other stakeholders informed of any new developments.

Videos of the cabling process

In 2013/2014, a similar project took place in Apeldoorn Zuid. You can see from the videos what is likely to happen in De Maten. These videos do not provide an exact picture, as the circumstances surrounding these projects are not always the same. The approach is similar, but the technical details may differ. For example, there is more space to work in an open area, and different machinery can be used there than in an urban area.

Magnetic fields

The 150 kV high-voltage power lines generate electromagnetic fields. This raises questions amongst local residents. It is a well-known cause for concern and debate.
