Matenpark Sports Centre is set to become energy-neutral

Why this renovation?

As the municipality of Apeldoorn, we are working together with residents and organisations on ‘Apeldoorn’s energy’. We have three main objectives for the period up to 2030:

• Lower energy consumption
• More renewable energy
• Anyone can take part

Our main goal is to generate all of Apeldoorn’s energy locally by 2050. That is why we are going to save as much energy as possible and produce renewable energy. We are also going to heat buildings in a different way, without natural gas. At present, many buildings still use natural gas. This is a fossil fuel. When it is burnt, CO₂ is released. Furthermore, supplies could run out. The switch to sustainable heating is therefore necessary and important.

Unique: Apeldoorn’s first municipal green façade

The Matenpark Sports Centre will be the first municipal building in Apeldoorn to feature a green façade. This green façade is not just pleasing to the eye; it also helps to:

• Rainwater harvesting
• Air purification
• Providing a habitat for birds and insects

What’s going to change?

Energy and heating

• New lighting: All light bulbs are being replaced with LED lighting. This uses much less electricity.
• Heat pumps: The old gas boilers are being phased out. They are being replaced by modern heat pumps for heating.
• Hot water: We’re no longer using gas for hot water either. We’re getting a heat pump water heater.
• Solar panels: The building is to be fitted with additional solar panels. These generate renewable electricity.
• Battery for storage: A battery will be installed to reduce energy consumption during peak hours and to store electricity for later use. In this way, we are aiming to increase the use of energy we generate ourselves.

Better insulation

• New windows: The old double glazing is being replaced with HR++ glazing. This helps to retain heat better in winter and keep it out in summer.
• Insulation: The entire exterior of the building will be better insulated and made airtight.

Greater comfort and accessibility

• New ventilation system: A balanced ventilation system with heat recovery will be installed. This will provide fresh air and save energy.
• Lift: The building will become more accessible thanks to a new lift.
• The shower and changing area will be fitted with new sanitary ware.
• Extra space: A new multi-purpose space is being created which can be put to better use.
• View of the hall: The canteen will be on the first floor, which means you’ll be able to look out onto the hall from the canteen.

Sustainable materials and water

• Circular construction: We use materials that can be reused as much as possible.
• Greywater system: Rainwater is reused wherever possible.
• More greenery: There will be more greenery around the building, including nesting boxes for birds.

With this renovation, we are demonstrating that the municipality of Apeldoorn is at the forefront of sustainability. We are setting a good example and inspiring residents and businesses to take steps towards an energy-neutral future too.

The refurbished Matenpark Sports Centre will serve as an example of how we want to live in 2050: energy-neutral, sustainable and comfortable. A place where sport and sustainability come together.
