The Municipality of Apeldoorn is launching the ‘Boompje erbij’ initiative in local neighbourhoods. We will be giving away trees at seven different locations across our municipality. These locations have been chosen based on the number of trees in a neighbourhood and areas prone to extreme heat in the summer. Of course, residents from other neighbourhoods are also welcome to come and collect a tree. These are small trees, which you can easily take home to your own garden. Even by bike.
This year, we are giving away the following tree varieties:
- Doyenné du Comice (Pyrus communis ‘Doyenné du Comice’)
- Stewing pear (Pyrus communis ‘Gieser Wilderman’)
- Desert Apple (Malus domestica ‘Elstar’)
- Cultivated apple (Malus domestica ‘Rode Boskoop’)
- Plum (Prunus domestica ‘Opal’)
- European hop-beech (Ostrya carpinifolia)
- Ornamental apple (Malus ‘Adams’)
- Black Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera)
- Ornamental cherry (Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’)
- Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
- Maple (Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala)
- Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia)
- Mongolian Linden (Tilia mongolica ‘Buda’)
- Maple (Acer × freemanii ‘Jeffersred’ – Autumn Blaze)
- Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’)
Please note: last year we also gave out shrubs and small plants. This year we are only giving out trees.

When you come to collect a sapling, we ask you to enter your postcode and house number online whilst you are there. You can do this by scanning a QR code provided on site. You can use your own smartphone for this. If you do not have a smartphone, a member of staff will be happy to assist you.
Distribution takes place from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Can someone else pick up a tree for me?
Yes, that’s allowed. If you are unable to come in person, someone else may collect a tree on your behalf. A maximum of three trees may be collected per person. You must, however, enter three different addresses on the form.
Are the trees organic?
No, the trees are not yet organic. The municipality of Apeldoorn has been working with regular suppliers for many years. These suppliers are currently in the process of switching to organic cultivation. As this transition is still ongoing and the municipality purchases large quantities of trees at a time, the trees included in this promotion are not yet organic.
Why do I need to provide my postcode and house number?
We are asking for your postcode and house number so that we can assess the impact of this initiative. This will help us identify which neighbourhoods the trees are being allocated to and whether they are being planted in areas where they are most needed. For example, in places where it gets very hot in summer or where there are few trees. The council will only use your details for this purpose. You consent to the use of your details when you scan the QR code and enter your postcode and house number. This is done in accordance with the rules of the GDPR (data protection legislation).
Who is Stimenz and why are they helping with the campaign?
Stimenz is assisting the municipality of Apeldoorn with the ‘Boompje Erbij’ campaign. They are helping residents who need assistance with registering using the QR code.
I live in a rented property. Am I allowed to plant a tree in my garden?
You may only do this if your landlord gives permission. So please check with your housing association or landlord first before planting the tree.
Why don’t you come to my village or neighbourhood?
The locations are chosen in areas of the municipality of Apeldoorn where it can get particularly hot in the summer. In addition, we also manually select a few neighbourhoods each year, so that every neighbourhood gets a turn. That is why we set up in different locations in the neighbourhoods and villages each year (with the exception of the Marktplein). This way, everyone gets a chance.
Where should I put the paving slabs, gravel and white/yellow sand that come loose when planting the tree?
You can register the paving slabs you remove from your garden with the Tegeltaxi. You can take the gravel and the white/yellow sand to the Circulus Recycling Centre (see Sand in What goes where).
Can I plant my tree when it’s snowing?
Yes, that’s possible; the main thing is to make sure no frozen snow gets into the planting hole. If necessary, you could plant it in a pot first and then move it into the ground once the snow has melted.
