The data that is made publicly available can be read, edited and processed by computers. Open data involves the provision of raw data (known as datasets).
Examples of datasets include:
- Number of applications and terminations under the Work and Social Assistance Act
- location data on cycle parking facilities, multi-storey car parks, parking zones and Park & Ride facilities
- Most visited topics on the council website.
The local authority makes open data available to the local community in order to foster innovation, creativity, collaboration and self-reliance. In doing so, it pays particular attention to and takes great care with regard to confidentiality and privacy.
Open data is government information that:
- has been collected in the course of carrying out a public function
- is funded from public funds for the purpose of carrying out that task
- is public under the Freedom of Information Act
- preferably complies with ‘open standards’
- preferably readable by a computer
- No copyright or other third-party rights are attached to it.
