Apeldoorn Drinks Water!

Water is healthy; it quenches your thirst and is good for your body, your skin and your brain. Drinking lots of sugary drinks is one of the causes of unhealthy weight in children. By replacing sugary drinks with water or fruit-infused water, we can improve children’s health. JOGG encourages children and young people to drink water through the ‘Apeldoorn Drinks Water!’ campaign.

Easy, cheap, healthy and sustainable

It’s easy to send children to school with cartons of juice or fizzy drinks, but these seemingly harmless drinks result in an average sugar intake of 6 kilos per child per year. Drinking water offers many benefits compared to sweetened drinks:

  • No sugar crash: This has a positive effect on concentration and learning.
  • Better for your health: Water contains no sugar or other added substances, but it does contain minerals.
  • Better for your teeth: Sweet drinks cause tooth decay.
  • Positive effect on weight: Water helps flush waste products out of the body.
  • Cheaper: Water is cheaper than drinks in cartons or bottles. You can save between 5 and 10 euros per child per week.
  • Easy: Water comes out of the tap, so parents don’t need to buy cartons or other drinks to send with their children to school.
  • Better for the environment: Empty packets and bottles end up in the rubbish. This saves 200 packets or bottles per child per year.

‘Apeldoorn Drinks Water!’ campaign

The aim of Apeldoorn DrinktWater is to encourage children to drink more water instead of sugary drinks. Drinking water at school helps pupils stay healthier and has many other benefits. It improves concentration during lessons, reduces waste and minimises mess in the classroom. We launched the Apeldoorn DrinktWater campaign in 2019. Twenty-three primary schools in Apeldoorn are now taking part. They are all enthusiastic and can see the positive effects of drinking water.

Convinced? Here’s how your school can take part

Are you ready to drink more water at school? If so, sign your school up via the registration form. The JOGG coordinator would be happy to visit to discuss with you how you can incorporate water drinking into your routine. This could involve, for example, drinking water one day a week, every day at 10 o’clock, or throughout the day.

We’re making it as easy as possible! Free water bottles for all pupils!

If your school starts encouraging pupils to drink water, we’ll make it as easy as possible with letters to parents, posters and reusable water bottles for every pupil and teacher. It’s also possible to water barrels to borrow from JOGG Apeldoorn, thereby making it easier to drink water during sports days and events. The support and resources are provided free of charge.
