Mirjam Huisman new Apeldoorn city photographer

Mirjam Huisman is to become Apeldoorn’s new City Photographer. She will take over from Sam Warnaar at the end of this summer, becoming the city’s sixth City Photographer.

The selection committee chose Mirjam Huisman because of the high quality of her work. They also appreciate her distinctive style and the unique way in which she views people and the city.  Huisman studied at the Fotovakschool in Amsterdam, graduating cum laude, and works as a freelance photographer. Her work mainly consists of portraits of young people and individuals from various subcultures. Her photographs often have a raw and cinematic atmosphere. Music, films and people who fall outside the mainstream are an important source of inspiration for her. Huisman: “I create portrait stories without a clear beginning or end, allowing the viewer to form their own narrative.”.

This autumn, Apeldoorn will have the chance to discover Huisman’s work at her debut exhibition. In September, the current City Photographer, Sam Warnaar, will present her final exhibition at CODA.

City Ambassador

The City Photographer is an artistic ambassador for Apeldoorn. This role involves the photographer promoting the city as a ‘city of photography’ by maintaining a visible presence in (print) media, on social media and in public spaces. The City Photographer is supported and advised by a committee comprising ACEC, Apeldoorn Photo, CODA, the Fotovakschool and the local council. Every two years, the local council appoints a new City Photographer.
