A special work of art has been installed at the Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap (KSG) in Apeldoorn in honour of former Prime Minister Piet de Jong. The sculpture, entitled ‘Wings of Vision’, was created by artist Jukka Mathijssen and was unveiled in a festive ceremony on Wednesday 27 May.
Piet de Jong (1915–2016) became Prime Minister of the Netherlands in 1967. He was born in Apeldoorn and attended the KHBS, the predecessor of the KSG. During the Second World War, De Jong served as a submarine commander. He was awarded the Bronze Cross twice for his bravery. Later, as Prime Minister during a turbulent period, he ensured stability and progress in the Netherlands. Following his death in 2016, the municipality received a request to create a permanent tribute to him.
The KSG was happy to help with the installation of the artwork on the school grounds. A jury, comprising pupils and the former prime minister’s children, amongst others, selected Mathijssen’s design. The artwork, ‘Wings of Vision’, references De Jong’s life and work in various ways. It symbolises his leadership, courage and forward-looking vision.
On Friday 27 March, the artwork was unveiled by Peter Messerschmidt, Councillor for Culture, and the artist Mathijssen. Councillor Messerschmidt said: “Piet de Jong is an inspiring role model for young and old alike. With this artwork, we are not only honouring his remarkable career; it is also a place where new generations can learn from his story. Right here, at his old school, the artwork and the memory of Piet de Jong invite you to reflect on your own role in society. A wonderful legacy from a remarkable resident of Apeldoorn.”
