The Pottenbakkersdonk neighbourhood is in need of a major refurbishment. On this project page, you will find all the information about the preliminary design we have drawn up for Pottenbakkersdonk. This is the design that we have amended in response to residents’ comments.

The greenery along the street will remain largely the same. Where possible, we will enlarge the green areas and, where necessary, widen the parking spaces. To do this, we will narrow the green areas provided this does not affect the trees already there. We are planting new trees in areas with sufficient growing space. And we are removing a few trees that are in very small planting beds or are not in good condition. Where there are currently bare patches in the planting, we are filling them in. When selecting the new plants, we are focusing primarily on species that promote biodiversity.
We are going to make the green park area around Pottenbakkersdonk much more attractive from an ecological point of view. We will do this by planting flower-rich grass in places instead of a standard lawn, and by ‘covering’ the fences at the rear of the houses with taller shrubs.

There are lots of mini play areas in De Donken. That’s great, of course, but it’s a shame that the very small ones aren’t often much fun to play in – nor are they much fun for parents to stand by. Often there’s just one piece of play equipment, usually tucked away behind some parking spaces. You’ll have had enough of it after five minutes. The chance of bumping into a neighbour’s child to play with is very slim. That’s why we want to consolidate the play areas into larger – and therefore much more enjoyable – spaces. Places where people can meet up. In De Donken, we therefore want to transform the sports field between the primary schools, at the Ericastichting, into a meeting place for young and old. There will still be plenty of space for sport, but this will be complemented by play facilities, particularly for the slightly older primary school-aged children. It should become a place for the whole neighbourhood – one that’s worth hopping on your bike to visit.
As well as this area, we also want to create various green play areas aimed specifically at the very youngest children. These are often located closer to home. There is such a green play area in Pottenbakkersdonk, bordering houses 319–328. The idea is to phase out the mini-play areas that are currently in place, so that we can use the budget for a much more fun and challenging play area.
We want to remove the play area opposite house 811 straight away as part of the redevelopment. This area is very close to the larger, more attractive green play area. And in exchange for this play area, we can create extra parking spaces and green spaces. We would like to work with local residents to transform the larger, green play area into something even more enjoyable.

The parking spaces in De Maten are often narrower than the current standard. As a result, it is often not possible to use all the parking bays at the same time. There is usually one car parked off-centre in a bay, which means you can no longer use the bay next to it. In theory, there are plenty of parking spaces, but if they can never all be used, they are of little practical use to us. That is why we have decided to make the bays wider. In most places, we can now create the same number of spaces, but they will be wider than the current ones. In some places, we can even create more spaces. In a few instances, widening the parking spaces has resulted in one fewer space compared to the current situation. Overall, we can now create 11 additional parking spaces compared to the existing situation.
We are replacing the existing concrete paving stones and concrete slabs on the carriageway with new, brown concrete paving stones. We are also using these stones in other residential streets in De Maten that we are repaving. This will help to create a greater sense of unity in the neighbourhood. The brown colour gives a warmer appearance than the grey concrete paving stones.
We mark parking spaces using paving slabs in a different colour and a ‘P’ tile. You may only park in these spaces within a residential area. The parking mats are rectangular patches of paving in a different colour, just like the existing parking bays. As part of the redevelopment, we intend to fill these mats with reused grey concrete paving stones. Manufacturing new concrete paving stones is a process that releases a lot of CO2. That is why we are reusing as many stones as possible. In this way, we are doing our bit to help reduce CO2 emissions.
At the access points leading from the central play area, we are creating a pattern using black concrete blocks. This serves to make motorists more alert.
De Pottenbakkersdonk is a residential area. In principle, it is perfectly designed to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists over cars. Cars are slowed down by all the sharp bends in the road and narrow sections. However, there are still a few spots where drivers can go faster than is desirable.
To ensure that drivers do not drive too fast, almost all of the existing speed bumps will be reinstalled. We will design the new speed bumps in accordance with current standards. This means they will be slightly higher and steeper, thereby effectively slowing traffic down.
To prevent people from accidentally driving into the dead-end section of the neighbourhood, we are replacing a number of speed bumps with what is known as a ‘cushion’. This is a small raised section in the middle of the carriageway, as if a cushion had been placed there. This is not so much intended to slow traffic down – as that is not necessary at this location, so close to a bend – but rather to ensure that people do not drive in this direction without thinking.

Rainwater is currently drained via the sewer system. Under the new plan, we will partially divert the rainwater. You won’t be able to see any of this once it’s in place; it will all happen underground. The idea is that rainwater can simply drain away from the street via the gullies that are already in place. However, instead of channelling the water into the sewer system, we’ll direct it to underground storage areas. We’ll create these beneath the car park spaces. There, we’ll lay a thick layer of coarse stones, with plenty of gaps between them, into which the water can seep. In this way, the water returns to the ground, where it belongs. We produce the coarse stones by breaking up old concrete paving stones. This gives these stones a new purpose.
De Maten is one of the first neighbourhoods in Apeldoorn to phase out natural gas and switch to sustainable heating. As a result, a number of changes will also be taking place in Pottenbakkersdonk. Read more about this on the Apeldoorn Energy website.
