Shared transport is becoming increasingly important. This applies not only to cars, but also to scooters and bicycles. The council recognises the benefits of vehicle sharing. It is sustainable, as vehicles spend less time idle. It also requires less space for parking. This frees up more space in your neighbourhood for things like green spaces or a vegetable garden, for example. Or space to play or socialise.
Vision for shared mobility
Environmental Vision: spatial developments and transport hubs
Apeldoorn has a growth ambition. This is set out in the Environmental Vision 2040. Over the coming years, we will be building 12,000 homes in Apeldoorn. There will also be scope for our businesses to expand. These developments present opportunities for shared transport. To ease the pressure on parking, we are discussing with housing developers how shared transport can form part of the wider mobility picture.
The Environmental Vision also states that four mobility hubs will be established in Apeldoorn. A hub is a place where various modes of transport and/or services are offered. Apeldoorn will have three out-of-town hubs and one station hub. Residents and visitors to Apeldoorn will be able to use shared transport options there, such as car-sharing and bike-sharing schemes, as well as public transport. You can also park your car there, making it easy to visit the city centre or the surrounding area by shared bike. The council is currently working with the province of Gelderland to develop the mobility hubs.
Shared Mobility Action Plan
The council considers shared transport to be important. We have therefore drawn up a Shared Mobility Action Plan. In this plan, we set out our vision for shared transport in Apeldoorn. The areas covered include: shared transport in area development, shared transport in existing neighbourhoods, and the prevention of nuisance. Preference for electric cars
When it comes to shared transport, the council prefers to use electric vehicles. Electric cars have a positive impact on air quality, noise pollution and the climate. Electric cars emit no, or far fewer, harmful substances and are often powered by green electricity. In Apeldoorn, there are charging points for electric cars at many locations. Apeldoorn is working with other organisations to capitalise on the opportunities offered by electric shared transport:
In 2020, residents of Apeldoorn collectively owned more than 81,000 passenger cars
That’s one car for every two residents. These cars are stationary for most of the day. Often, a car is only used for one or two hours a day. There are two to three parking spaces available per car. This applies not only at home, but also at work, at the shops and at sports facilities.
Car-sharing users are more selective in how they use their vehicles and make more conscious decisions about when to use a car and when not to. Save money with a car-sharing scheme
As well as benefiting the city, car-sharing is also attractive to residents and visitors. If you drive less than 5,000 to 10,000 km a year, a shared car is often more cost-effective. You then avoid the costs of purchase, insurance, tax and maintenance. Owning a second-hand petrol car costs at least €300 a month. For the same cost, you can use a car-sharing or bike-sharing service several times a month. Information on the costs of owning a car can be found online, for example on the ANWB website.
