Fancy joining us on a journey of discovery? Discover the grand story of Apeldoorn…

In November, Apeldoorn will host no fewer than two national conferences: the National Monuments Conference and the Reuvensdagen, the national archaeology conference. With Apeldoorn currently celebrating its heritage, the council invites you to discover our history too. Through special excursions and activities, you’ll learn about the stories behind our city, villages and landscape.

On Thursday 12 November, the National Monuments Conference will take place at the Orpheus Theatre. Under the theme ‘Through different eyes – the value of heritage’, professionals and enthusiasts will come together to share ideas about the future of monuments. This will be followed by the Reuvensdagen on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 November. The focus there will be on archaeology: what do finds and traces in the ground tell us about our past?

Peter Messerschmidt, Councillor for Culture and Heritage: “I am proud that Apeldoorn has been chosen to host these two national conferences. It shows just how much our municipality has to offer in terms of heritage. From Paleis Het Loo and Radio Kootwijk to watermills, industrial heritage and centuries-old traces in the landscape. That history belongs to us all. That’s why I think it’s wonderful that local residents can also take part in the excursions. Come along and discover the story behind places you may have been passing by for years.”

Peter Drenth, Member of the Provincial Executive of Gelderland: “The Heritage Congress and the Reuvensdagen are key forums for professionals in heritage conservation and archaeology. The exchange of knowledge – including on public archaeology – helps us to better preserve our heritage and bring it to life. Monuments, archaeological finds, historic landscapes and traditions tell the stories of a region. Stories that bring people together, strengthen identity and show where we come from. That is what makes heritage valuable to our society.”
