Demolition of the Pakhoed Towers next to the Hertzberger building has begun

Demolition of the Pakhoed Towers next to the former Hertzberger building has begun. Councillor Peter Messerschmidt officially launched the works this morning. This marks an important milestone in the redevelopment of the area around the iconic former Centraal Beheer headquarters, designed by architect Herman Hertzberger, on Prins Willem Alexanderlaan.

The Pakhoed Towers form part of the area that the council purchased at the end of 2024 in order to take control of the area’s future. The municipal council had previously decided to draw up a future scenario in which the former Centraal Beheer office would be retained and further developed. This scenario focuses on the creation of an innovative police hub with facilities open to the public in the former Hertzberger building.

The Amaliakwartier is taking shape around the Hertzberger building, offering space for living, working, socialising and green spaces. The demolition of the Pakhoed Towers will create space for housing and the development of public spaces. We expect to build around 550 homes on this site.

Councillor Peter Messerschmidt
“Today marks an important milestone in the development of the Amaliakwartier. With the demolition of the Pakhoed Towers, we are literally creating space for renewal. After years of standing empty and falling into disrepair, the area is thus being given a new future.”

The Amalia Quarter, with the Hertzberger is a key icon for the Spoorzone and will soon act as a driving force for Apeldoorn as a City of Safety. The education sector, public safety partners, government and the business community are working together here on innovation, digitalisation, cybercrime, social resilience and national security. The aim: to make a significant contribution to enhancing the national security and resilience of the Netherlands.

The province of Gelderland recently allocated €30 million for the development of the Amaliakwartier and the former Hertzberger building. This contribution provides a significant boost to the development of the Spoorzone and the area around Apeldoorn Central Station.
