Foster Care Week: offering a home to a child

Foster Care Week runs from 28 October to 4 November. It is a week that focuses on children who are temporarily unable to live at home and the people who are there to support them.

Support and foster families are needed in Apeldoorn too. A safe and familiar place, personal attention or just a bit of peace and quiet now and then can make a huge difference to a child. That is why, during Foster Care Week, we are asking people to give extra thought to the various ways in which local residents can make a difference to a child’s life.

Different ways

Not every child has the same needs, and not every family can offer the same level of support. That is why there are different ways to act as a support parent and different forms of foster care. In foster care, a child lives with another family either temporarily or for a longer period; this can be on a full-time or part-time basis. A support family provides a child with a safe and familiar place at agreed times. For example, one afternoon a week or part of a day every two weeks. It is an accessible and voluntary form of support.

Making a difference to a child’s life

Councillor Ingrid de Bondt: “Every child deserves a place where they feel safe and valued. Sometimes this requires temporary extra support. Support parents and foster families can then offer peace of mind and stability. It is important that children and families in Apeldoorn can count on that support.”
