Winter shelter for the homeless at De Ambacht

This winter, too, the municipality of Apeldoorn is providing shelter for people who are homeless. From December 2026 to March 2027, they can visit De Ambacht every day for a hot meal, a shower, toilet facilities and a safe place to sleep. The Salvation Army is running the shelter.

The winter childcare centre is open daily from 6.00 pm to 8.00 am. In the event of extreme weather or a wind chill of -10 degrees or lower, the shelter may also be open during the day. These opening hours are more extensive than in previous years. In November and March, the winter shelter only opens when the wind chill is 0 degrees or lower. There is space for up to 50 people.

A safe place during the winter months

Councillor Myrthe Kuipers emphasises the importance of the winter shelter: “Through the winter shelter, we offer people who are homeless or without a place to stay a safe place to spend the night. Especially during the coldest months of the year, we believe it is important that nobody has to sleep rough.”

Experiences from last winter

The winter shelter at De Ambacht was also run by the Salvation Army last year. Many people made use of the shelter, which had a positive impact on the town. A number of areas for improvement have been incorporated into the plans for the coming winter.

On 26 October, there will be a drop-in session for local residents at De Ambacht, where they can ask questions and take a look inside the winter shelter.

Permanent location for winter shelter

The shelter at De Ambacht is a temporary solution. The site is due to be developed for housing in the future. The council is therefore working on a permanent facility for the winter accommodation of the homeless. It is not yet clear when this will be in place. Residents and those affected will be informed as soon as further details are available.
