The Para Track Cycling World Championships are coming to Apeldoorn

Apeldoorn is gearing up for a major international sporting event. From Thursday 29 October to Sunday 1 November, the Para Track Cycling World Championships will take place at Omnisport. This year, no fewer than 240 riders from 46 countries will be competing for the coveted rainbow jerseys. With more participants and more countries than ever before, it promises to be a special World Championships.

During the World Championships, athletes with various physical and visual impairments will be coming to Apeldoorn. They will compete against one another in sprint and endurance events. There will be individual and team events.

In track cycling, riders compete in different categories. In the C category, riders use standard bicycles, sometimes with minor technical modifications. The B category is for riders with a visual impairment. They ride a tandem with a sighted pilot.

The World Championships are also a special occasion for Apeldoorn. The list of participants includes, amongst others, Andre Wijnhoud from Ugchelen. This makes him a local athlete to keep an eye on during the World Championships at Omnisport.

Marco Wenzkowski, the councillor responsible for sport, is looking forward to the World Championships: “With the Para Track Cycling World Championships, we are once again bringing a fantastic international elite sporting event to Apeldoorn. We are proud that athletes from all over the world are coming together here to compete for the world titles. At the same time, this World Championships demonstrates that sport is for everyone. I hope that many local residents will come to Omnisport to cheer on the athletes and be inspired by their performances.”

Take part yourself during the side event

In the run-up to the World Cup, there is also plenty of focus on cycling and exercise. On Wednesday 21 October, the final of the Pumptrack Tour will take place at Pumptrack Dubbelbeek. In the weeks leading up to the final, children and adults can improve their skills on the pump track during free clinics and practice sessions. During the final, participants will have the chance to show off what they have learnt.

The activities are suitable for a range of ages and ability levels. You are welcome to bring your own bike or scooter, but bikes, scooters and helmets are also available to borrow. The Pumptrack Tour is one of the activities through which Apeldoorn aims to get residents excited about cycling and exercise in the run-up to the World Championships.
