Last weekend, I was able to pop round to see her for a short while. I took a few presents and, of course, a warm welcome on behalf of the whole of Apeldoorn. Because Louise isn’t just our 170,000th resident. She also symbolises the people who bring Apeldoorn to life day in, day out. People, each with their own story. People who were born here, who have come to live here, work here, go to school here, play sport here and meet one another here.

And Apeldoorn is growing. In 1958, we celebrated our 100,000th resident. This was followed by the milestones of 125,000, 150,000 and 160,000. By the end of 2021, we had passed the 165,000 mark, and now our population stands at 170,000. We will continue to grow in the coming years. This is more than just a number on the counter. Growth means homes, good schools, accessible neighbourhoods and amenities. But it also means space for green areas, for socialising, and for the villages and neighbourhoods that make Apeldoorn so special.

It is no coincidence, then, that our coalition agreement is entitled ‘Space for People’. We want to grow, but at the same time remain a green and spacious municipality – a place where people can enjoy living, get involved and look out for one another.

Because, ultimately, growth isn’t about the numbers on the counter. It’s about the people themselves. It’s about the space we give one another to live, to thrive and to play our part. It’s about a local authority where everyone can feel at home.

170,000 residents. A major milestone, and the figure 170,000 is wonderful.
