Monuments protected by the national government. These are buildings of national importance; they are significant not only for Apeldoorn, but for the whole of the Netherlands. - Municipal monuments
Listed buildings. These are buildings of special significance to Apeldoorn. - Landmark buildings
Buildings that are important to the distinctive character of a neighbourhood or village. They embody, as it were, the character of their surroundings.
Apeldoorn’s list of listed buildings is now complete. In 2024, we added properties from the period 1970–1990 to the list. On the odd occasion, we still designate a municipal monument from the period prior to 1970.
You can submit an application online to have a building designated as a municipal monument. We will then ask you to provide the following details:
- The address of the property for which you are applying for designation
- The reason why you are applying for authorisation
- Photos of both the interior and exterior of the property
- Any additional information about the history of the property.
You cannot submit a request regarding the list of national monuments. However, you can make suggestions for this list. You can read more about this at the website of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
The council will assess whether your application is eligible. If necessary, we will commission an independent quick scan. The Municipal Executive will then decide whether to proceed with your application. This decision is based on a balancing of interests, taking into account the owner’s interests and whether the protection of the property contributes to a number of municipal objectives. For example, an assessment is made as to whether such protection contributes to The Big Story of Apeldoorn. Consideration is also being given to whether the designation is in line with the objectives set out in the coalition agreement ‘Roll up your sleeves and get to work’ and the Environmental Vision.
Once the designation procedure can be initiated, we draw up a reasoned description of the property. In doing so, we may seek advice from the Environmental Quality Committee. The committee will then assess whether the property is of sufficient value to warrant protection. The local authority will also consult with the owners. A decision will then be taken by the Municipal Executive.
We will process your application within 6 months. There is no charge for applying for designation as a municipal monument.
