- You must register within 3 days of your child's birth.
Does the third day fall on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday? Then you can still file the declaration on the first working day after. If you file the declaration too late, you may be fined by the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM).
- Is the father or mother unable to declare the birth themselves? Then someone who was present at the birth must make the declaration. For example, a family member, friend, the midwife, doctor or maternity nurse. The declaration can then only be made in person at the reception desk.
You can declare the birth in two ways:

You can give birth online if any of the situations below apply to you:
- You are married or in a registered partnership.
- You have the child approved (pdf, 112 kB) before birth.
- As duo mothers, you are married or in a registered partnership and the child was recognised before birth or you have a donor declaration.
- You are a single parent.

Make an appointment to declare the birth.
Take to appointment:
- A valid identity document
- Birth certificate from hospital or midwife
- Copy of acknowledgement of unborn foetus (if you have acknowledged)
- The marriage or partnership booklet (not compulsory)
- A statement from the Foundation for donor data on artificial insemination (when applicable)
After the declaration, you will receive a message from your home municipality which will include the assigned Citizen Service Number (BSN).

The birth booklet is a nice reminder of a special moment. The booklet has no official status, but it is nice to have. For yourself, but also for your child later. It will contain an excerpt from the birth certificate and there is space to stick a lock of your child's hair and photo. You can fill in a family tree with the parents' and grandparents' details. It also contains all kinds of useful information on, for example, the national vaccination programme and the consultation bureau. There is enough space left over to keep a diary of the first, rather special weeks.
Request
During your online declaration, you can order the birth booklet. The cost is €13.50. You can pay this via iDeal. The booklet will then be sent to your home automatically. If you register at the town hall, you can pay for the booklet on the spot and take it with you.
