Your baby was stillborn
You must register the birth at the local authority where your baby was born. The local authority will issue a ‘certificate of stillbirth’.

Report a crime
There are two ways to register a stillborn baby:
- by a funeral director
- by yourself
Declaration by a funeral director
A funeral director can register a death. They do this using eHerkenning. All communication takes place with the funeral director.
Filing your own tax return
You can register the birth of your stillborn baby yourself. To do so, please use the button above to make an appointment.

What should you bring to the appointment?
- valid proof of identity for the person making the declaration and a copy of the mother’s proof of identity;
- a doctor’s certificate or other document stating the date on which the baby was stillborn;
- a completed request (PDF, 705 KB) if, as a parent or parents, you wish to have your stillborn child recorded alongside your personal details in the BRP. You can find more information under ‘Registration in the BRP’.
Where applicable:
- certificate of acknowledgement of paternity, if paternity was acknowledged prior to the birth;
- a declaration of the chosen name, if a name has been chosen prior to the birth;
- a statement regarding anonymous sperm donation (two mothers), if you have one;
- a marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate if you wish to have your child registered.
Permission for burial or cremation
To bury or cremate your child, you will need our permission (a certificate of authorisation). You will receive this certificate immediately upon registering your child’s death. You must therefore register the death before the burial or cremation.
When is leave not required by law?
If the pregnancy lasted less than 24 weeks and your baby did not survive, or survived for less than 24 hours. You are still entitled to leave in this situation. Call 14 055 for more information.
Registering your stillborn baby
- Have you already registered your child, but is your child not yet listed in the BRP? If so, you can still do this. Whenever you like. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was.
- Do you still need to submit a declaration? You can register with the BRP at the same time as submitting your declaration, but this is not mandatory. For information on how to submit a declaration, please refer to the section above.
There are three ways to register in the BRP:
- Click the white button above to make an appointment and submit your request at the counter
- Online via the orange button above; you must submit your application using your DigiD. Do you and your partner both wish to register your child? If so, you must each submit your own application.
- In writing; you can this form (PDF, 705 KB) send it by post to your local council. Please enclose a copy of your ID with your application.
Are you making an appointment? Please bring the following with you:
- a valid form of identification
- the birth certificate (stillborn). If you do not yet have a certificate, please see the section entitled “Registering a stillborn child”.
Good to know:
- You are not obliged to include your child in your personal details. It is entirely up to you whether you wish to do so.
- This is a personal decision. You are submitting a request on your own behalf to add the child to your personal data. If the other parent wishes to do the same, they must submit a request themselves.
- You can always change your choice.
- If you have not lived in the Netherlands since 1 October 1994, you cannot register your child in the BRP. Your personal details are not held in the BRP, so your child cannot be added to it either.
Making a declaration and registering with the BRP is free of charge. A copy of a birth or death certificate costs €17.10.
