Adoption

When a child is adopted, they officially become part of your family. Adoption creates a new legal family relationship between the child and the adoptive parent(s). An adoption is granted by the court. You will always need the assistance of a solicitor for this. Information on adoption can be found on the Government website.

Registering with the local council

Once the court has finalised the adoption, the local authority where the adopted child was born will be notified automatically. If the adoption is from abroad, you must register the adopted child in the Personal Records Database (BRP) yourself. To find out exactly what you need, please contact us on 14 055.
