Following adoption or a change of gender, you can have certain old details removed or amended from the Personal Records Database (BRP). This is only possible if the adoption or gender change has been finalised.

Following an adoption or a change of gender, you can ask us to remove old personal data from the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). Some people may wish for certain data to no longer be visible in the BRP. For example, for privacy reasons or because the data no longer reflects their current situation. You can then choose for yourself whether certain data should be removed from the BRP. The data will no longer be visible after that, not even as historical information.

Who can apply for this:

You may request that your data be deleted if:

  • You have been adopted or have undergone gender reassignment, and you are aged 16 or over.
  • You are the guardian of someone who has undergone gender reassignment.
  • Your parent, (ex-)partner or child has undergone a gender reassignment.
  • You are the parent who gave the child up for adoption.

What data can you have deleted?

After your own gender reassignment:

  • Your former first name
  • Your former surname
  • Your (ex-)partner’s surname, if you used it

Following a gender reassignment by your parent, (ex-)partner or child:

  • The name and gender prior to the gender reassignment (delete old details)
  • The name and gender following the gender reassignment (delete new details)
  • Your (ex-)partner’s surname, if you used it

After adoption:

  • Your old name
  • Details of your biological parent(s)
  • A nationality you have lost as a result of adoption
  • Your previous address details
  • Information on immigration or emigration prior to the adoption

After giving your child up for adoption:

Conditions for the erasure of personal data

  • You must submit a written request.
  • It concerns adoption or a change of gender.
  • This concerns BRP data relating to adoption or a change of gender.
  • The adoption or gender reassignment has been fully finalised.

First, amend the birth certificate following a change of gender

Have you undergone a gender reassignment? If so, your birth certificate must first be amended.

  • Were you born in the municipality of Apeldoorn?

Book an appointment for apply for a change of gender.

  • Were you born in a different municipality?

Please contact that local council.

  • Were you born abroad but hold Dutch nationality?

Please sort this out with The Hague City Council.

Your birth certificate must first be amended. You can then submit a request to have your old details removed.

Adoptive parents cannot apply

Since 1 January 2022, adoptive parents are no longer permitted to request the removal of pre-adoption records. Only the adopted child may do so. They may do this from the age of 16. This ensures that the child’s records of parentage remain protected.

Cost

The removal of data from the BRP following adoption or a change of gender is free of charge.

Duration

We will make a decision within 4 weeks of receiving your application. You will be notified of our decision by post.
