If you are married or have registered a civil partnership, or following a dissolution, you can choose which surname the local authority uses when writing to you: your own surname or that of your partner. This is known as ‘name usage’ and applies to both men and women.

If you would like to be addressed differently to how you are currently addressed, you can submit a request to change the way your name is used. Your choice will then be recorded in the Personal Records Database (BRP). This ensures that other government bodies are also aware of it. However, they are not obliged to use this information. You can change your choice of name at any time. You should notify your local council of the change.

If you wish to change the way your name is used, you can choose from the following options:

  1. your own name 
  2. the name of the (ex-)partner 
  3. the name of your (ex-)partner followed by your own name 
  4. your own name followed by the name of your (ex-)partner.

There are two ways to change the way your name is written:

Book an appointment online to notify us of your change of name.
Take to appointment:

  • a valid form of identification.
