House number

Under the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings Act (BAG) and the General Local By-law, all residential and commercial properties must have their own property number (house number). You are not permitted to assign a house number to your home or business premises yourself. Only the local authority may do so. Once a house number has been allocated, you are obliged to display a house number (sign) that is clearly visible from the public highway.

You should apply for a house number in any of the situations listed below. In all cases, the allocation of a house number forms part of the procedure described.

  • If you are building a new home or commercial premises, you will need a environmental permit required.
  • In the event of the division or amalgamation of a residential property and/or commercial premises, an environmental permit may be required. This needs to be investigated. For further information, you can make an appointment with the Environment counter
  • If it is clear that you do not need an environmental permit, you can Apply for or change a house number.
