Sprenkelaar Vitality Programme

We all want our neighbourhood to be a good place to live and for us to get by together. In the Sprenkelaar neighbourhood, this isn’t always easy. Various groups, including residents, are working to improve the quality of life and foster a sense of community. Over the coming years, we want to strengthen the bonds between people and reduce divisions. There is a great deal of diversity in Sprenkelaar and we see many strengths and talents. By building on these, at the neighbourhood’s own pace, we will strengthen the social fabric of the neighbourhood. In addition, there are also a number of challenges in public spaces. We know from experience that combining social projects with physical improvements (or vice versa) yields excellent results. We would like to get started on this as soon as possible.

Cooperation with the parties involved and residents in the Sprenkelaar is important. There must be a prevailing sense that we are doing this together. This strengthens our sense of connection with one another and with the local area.

We asked residents and local community professionals what they consider important. The points below emerged from these discussions. We will be working on these.

Action / Point for attention

Who

Waste problems

There have been many complaints about litter around the high-rise blocks and rubbish being left next to the bins. A working group has been set up, which also includes residents. We are joining the working group that is already active and will support it.

Who

Loneliness

Local professionals say there is a great deal of loneliness in Sprenkelaar. The residents’ survey does not provide a clear picture of this. We intend to investigate this issue further.

Language teaching

There is a significant language deficit, so it is very important to pay extra attention to this – for both adults and children.

The local schools would like to have a healthy mix of children from different backgrounds. We are going to look into how we can help with this.

Children and young people

To investigate what types of youth work and facilities for young people are needed in this area. We will draw up a comprehensive action plan for this target group covering safety, activities, facilities and training.

Social opportunities and social problems

We are developing a comprehensive approach to tackle problems that often build up. These include poverty (debt, income poverty, energy poverty), parenting, daytime activities and finding meaning in life. Given the wide variety of cultures, the following are important: bringing people together, digital skills, helping people find their way in the Netherlands, specific activities for men and women, and language support. Ideally, these should be as local as possible and easily accessible. Collaboration with the residents’ organisation Sadika presents an opportunity in this regard.

Health and exercise

We want to reduce health-care avoidance and ensure that people understand the importance of good health. We are doing this in collaboration with GPs, amongst others. The Prevention Agreement can help in drawing up plans to achieve this. We encourage physical activity in an accessible way. An inviting outdoor space and suitable activities help to achieve this. Opportunities for this lie in improving outdoor spaces.

Work and daytime activities

The planned outdoor projects offer opportunities for work and daytime activities. We are looking into which projects we can combine, and how we can involve residents in their own neighbourhood.

Safety

Residents feel less safe than average. Road safety: people drive too fast. Further investigation seems warranted; any road improvements could perhaps be combined with the measures being taken on Anklaarseweg. Nuisance caused by young people is frequently mentioned, alongside drug-related crime and subversion. Further investigation in collaboration with partners such as the neighbourhood police officer and the neighbourhood enforcement officer.

Sustainability

Many residents say they consider this important but have not yet taken any action. This is partly due to a lack of knowledge about, for example, grants and financial options for making their homes more sustainable. It is important to involve residents in these developments.
