The Vogelbuurt was largely built in the 1950s. It comprises many single-family homes, both owner-occupied and rented. The neighbourhood has a population of around 5,000, a relatively high proportion of whom are single people. There are all sorts of facilities: a community centre, the Hart van Zuid shopping centre, primary schools and places of worship.
A large proportion of residents enjoy living in the Vogelbuurt. It is a lively, working-class neighbourhood where relations with neighbours are often very good. At the same time, residents have noticed that the neighbourhood has gone downhill. A growing number of people have little money to spend. In certain areas, it can sometimes be unsettled and untidy, such as near the shopping centre. And, on average, more people here suffer from mental health issues.
Fortunately, a lot is being done to help the neighbourhood get back on its feet. This includes efforts by the Vogelnest community centre. Residents and organisations have plenty of ideas for improving social cohesion.
Many people in the neighbourhood are troubled by the lack of parking spaces and speeding drivers. Residents also feel there is a lack of good public transport, particularly to the hospital. And they would like the shopping centre to remain a pleasant place, with a good range of shops. Safety is another area of concern. Around Hart van Zuid and in Zuiderpark, people sometimes do not feel safe.
Many homes are poorly insulated. This means less enjoyment of home life and higher energy bills. And this is despite the fact that some residents are already living in poverty. This has to change. Outdoor spaces also need upgrading. Fortunately, many pavements, streets and play areas are set to be refurbished in the near future. This presents an immediate opportunity to make the neighbourhood greener – and to tackle the litter problem.
Together with local residents and a range of organisations, we’re going to set to work to make the neighbourhood a little bit nicer. We’ve drawn up a plan setting out the key actions.
The following areas will receive extra attention in the coming years. First and foremost, we are working to improve the social situation, so that people can continue to live together harmoniously. We are tackling issues relating to traffic and local facilities, such as parking problems. We will be working to improve safety in the neighbourhood. We are also investing time in housing and sustainability, such as improving the insulation of homes. And finally, we are refurbishing public spaces, such as Vogelplein.
