Monitoring and consultation
In June and September 2024, extensive discussions were held with local residents living near the asylum seekers’ centre (the management group and the residents’ consultation group) regarding the monitoring process and its planning. These discussions centred on the dilemmas facing the COA and the local authority in providing the accommodation required in Apeldoorn. The outcome of these discussions was that – with the agreement of the local residents’ consultation group – another monitoring exercise was carried out in the autumn of 2024. This monitoring exercise was very similar to the one that took place during the same period in 2023.

The quality of life monitor includes data from the police and the local authority, as well as the results of questionnaires completed by local residents. On 14 January, the study was discussed with the management group and the local residents’ consultation group. They agreed with the study’s conclusions. On 6 February, the findings were discussed with the municipal council during a Political Market (PMA). The council, too, saw no reason in the study to halt the expansion to 600 spaces. Agreements have been reached with local residents and the management group to maintain or improve the quality of life on and around the site.
Next monitor
The local residents’ consultation group has agreed that the next monitoring exercise will be postponed until autumn 2026. This will allow the impact of 600 residents at this location to be assessed. It will also make it easier to compare the results with those of previous years, as the monitoring will take place during the same period.
