Until recently, the spring was largely underground and the water was mixed with overflow from the sewer system and discharged outside the stream system. The spring now flows into the Grift again, and the first restoration projects have been completed.
Three of the four western outlets have already been restored. The fourth joins the restored Orderbeek at Zanderijweg. The Driehuizerspreng has been constructed as an above-ground link to the Grift within a largely wide, park-like stream area. A feasibility study is being carried out into the confluence of the Orderbeek, the southern outlets of the Driehuizerspreng and the Grift.
As part of the Driehuizerspreng PWA-laan project, the stream has been constructed above ground along PWA-laan, alongside a new green space and a footpath/cycle path. The Driehuizerspreng is connected to the Grift along PWA-laan. The water from the Driehuizerspreng now remains within the Grift system, which is a positive development. Clean water stays clean and offers good opportunities for nature conservation. The stream is passable for fish. Previously, the stream water was channelled underground towards Apeldoorn Zuid, where it could mix with overflow water from the sewer system. New trees, shrubs and wild flora have been planted in the stream area, and the cycle path has been relocated to make more room for the stream.
Although the Driehuizerspreng was constructed in 2016 between the Bronbeekhof and the Grift near the Waterloseweg, the water from the spring did not initially reach the Grift. The ground was not yet completely watertight. Often, the water itself seals small shrinkage cracks in the loam. That is what happened here too, just as it did with the Orderbeek.
No separate vision has been drawn up for the Driehuizerspreng. The vision for the future of the stream forms part of the PWA Zone Area Vision. This has subsequently been set out in a development plan and image quality plan (PDF, 13.7 MB).
Although housing developments in the area are on a smaller scale than originally envisaged, work is underway on various projects to create a stream area as a key green infrastructure. An overview is provided below.
