Apeldoorn receives a European Social Fund (ESF) grant
The ESF is the main European fund for supporting employment. It helps people find work and ensures fairer employment opportunities for all EU citizens. The municipality of Apeldoorn receives a grant from the ESF. We use this grant to implement the ESF’s objectives in the fields of employment and education.
The municipality of Apeldoorn is the lead municipality for the Stedendriehoek and Noordwest Veluwe regions, which means that we have applied for the grant on behalf of the participating municipalities: Apeldoorn, Deventer, Zutphen, Meerinzicht (Harderwijk), Putten, Brummen and Olst-Wijhe.
ESF funding is allocated to vocational education (PrO) and Special Secondary Education (VSO) schools. PrO/VSO schools help pupils find work. An internship or a course can also be funded by the ESF.
Equal opportunities for all EU residents
Across Europe, the ESF aims to help people find better jobs. This ensures that all EU residents have the same opportunities. It does this by providing funding to residents, particularly young people, people on benefits and those with refugee status.
The ESF helps fund many thousands of projects in European towns, villages, rural areas and neighbourhoods. These projects offer all Europeans the opportunity to learn new skills and gain knowledge.
Working towards integration
In the Netherlands, the ESF allocates funds to two objectives:
- Ensure that 80% of people of working age are able to work.
- To reduce the number of households in which no one is in work to 100,000.
That is why the Netherlands makes use of ESF funding. This is mainly spent on people with low levels of education, migrants, jobseekers with disabilities, mothers returning to the labour market after a long break, ex-prisoners and young people without qualifications.
Keeping people in work for longer
Another key ESF theme focuses on older workers. As our population continues to age, the Netherlands wants to give people the opportunity to work for longer. ESF funding helps older workers. They learn to cope with situations relating to work and health, whilst training opportunities are also provided to help them acquire new skills. This improves their employment prospects. Employers play an important role in this by adapting their working practices to meet the needs of older workers.
