Royal honour for three volunteers World Shop Beekbergen

Lien Buitenhuis (80), Evert Jan Plante (81) and Pepie Pors (77) received royal honours from Mayor Ton Heerts on Saturday 23 May 2026. They were appointed Member in the Order of Orange-Nassau. They received the decoration during the 40th anniversary of the Wereldwinkel Beekbergen, an initiative started by them. On 1 June 2026, all three will retire from the World Shop.

Ms Buitenhuis, Mr Plante and Ms Pors founded the World Shop Beekbergen in May 1986. They started selling fair trade products at a bazaar and then from home, from a stall in Beekbergen and Lieren, and from an SRV trolley. In 1992, they founded the association Wereldwinkel Beekbergen, which was given a permanent home in a kiosk in 1993. Since 2001, the shop has been at Dorpsstraat 41B.

Lien Buitenhuis-Kers

Lien Buitenhuis-Kers is a board member and involved in purchasing from the start of the World Shop. She also decorated the shop windows. Between 1984 and 1992, she was also a deacon in the Hervormde Gemeente Beekbergen. She was also a voluntary activity counsellor with Zorggroep Atlant for many years, partly in addition to her paid job.

Evert Jan Plante

Evert Jan Plante is a board member (vice-chairman) of the World Shop. His activities included permit applications, renovations and volunteer recruitment. Between 1971 and 1986, he was also involved in the Stichting Eredag Beekbergen, Lieren and Oosterhuizen, many years as chairman. He was also a board member of the 4 and 5 May Beekbergen Foundation for many years, where he helped organise commemorations. He also devoted himself for many years to the Hervormde Gemeente Beekbergen, including as an elder and as a volunteer in the church centre.

Pepie Pors-Eikendal

Pepie Pors-Eikendal was a board member of the World Shop until 1997. In the role of secretary, she took on many administrative tasks. She was also active in the shop for many years. In the 1980s, she was also a deacon of the Hervormde Gemeente Beekbergen and a member of the parents' committee of the Prinses Juliana School in Lieren. Furthermore, she collected for EpilepsieNL for 50 years.

With their great commitment, these volunteers have played a key role in the flourishing of the World Shop.
