Ten primary schools in the municipality of Apeldoorn are taking part in the Water Race from 1 to 25 June. The project was launched on Wednesday 27 May by Councillor Danny Huizer at Koningin Emma Primary School. Over the course of four weeks, the ten participating teams will compete to clean up the water network. The Water Race focuses on three key themes: water use, water quality and extreme weather events.
If you live near one of the participating schools, you can also make space for water in your neighbourhood between 1 June and 25 June. During the Water Race, children from participating primary schools will be running a campaign. As a local resident, you can help by putting a sticker on your front door once you’ve taken part in an activity with the children. You can also hang a Water Race poster in your window.
By allowing urban and rural areas to act like a sponge, we can retain more water in the ground. In this way, we help the soil to absorb rainwater rather than letting it run off straight away. This can be achieved, for example, by diverting rainwater away from the sewer system, replacing paving with greenery, installing a rain barrel or creating a green roof.
Apeldoorn Council is keen to help residents make their gardens greener and more resilient to heat and rain. For example, you can receive a grant for a green roof or for rainwater harvesting. The schools taking part are Het Web, De Wegwijzer, De Diamant Beemte, De Schakel, Eben Haëzer, Sprengenpark, De Fakkel, Koningin Emma, Sebastiaan and Prins Willem Alexanderschool.
