On Saturday 6 June, at the grounds of Robur et Velocitas football club, Mayor Ton Heerts presented Fleur van Brink with the Apeldoorn Municipality Youth Award. She received the award in recognition of her exceptional dedication as a volunteer referee and her inspiring perseverance.
The award ceremony took place during the Janny van Rhee Girls’ Tournament, in the presence of players, coaches, parents and volunteers. At the busy sports complex, Fleur was given a special mention by the mayor. The Jeugdlintje is an award presented by the municipality of Apeldoorn to young people who have shown long-term and selfless commitment to their club, local community or city, or who have achieved something exceptional.
Fleur has been refereeing for Robur et Velocitas for several seasons now. According to the local council, this role requires not only knowledge of the game, but also courage, a good overview and strength of character. Furthermore, she is the only girl in the club to hold this position, which, according to the award ceremony, makes her a role model for other young athletes.
In addition to her efforts on the pitch, her sporting achievements were also recognised: Fleur came second in the ‘Amateur Referee of the Year’ award and even took first place in Gelderland.
During the award ceremony, attention was drawn to the personal circumstances in which she has continued her commitment. Despite a difficult period in her private life, she remains as dedicated as ever to her club and her role as a referee.
“That requires something you can’t train for or learn from a book: resilience,” said the mayor during the award ceremony. “Perseverance and a special strength.” With the presentation of the Jeugdlintje, Fleur was added to the list of young residents who, according to the council, are making a difference in the city.
