Cultural landscape grant

Apeldoorn has a rich history. Our landscape forms an important chapter in this story. The variations in elevation on the Veluwe, for example, were formed during the Ice Age. In the centuries that followed, people shaped the landscape: sandy plains were planted with forests, springs were channelled, farmland was cleared, settlements were built, roads were laid out, and country estates and country houses were established.

The Cultural Landscape Scheme aims to enhance the experience of, and restore, the valuable historic cultural landscape in the municipality of Apeldoorn. Individuals and organisations that are working to maintain or enhance valuable cultural-historical landscape features, or that organise activities to enhance the experience of these features, may apply for a grant.

This may involve the restoration of historic landscape features such as a stone circle, burial mound, springhead, avenue or line of sight; making landscape features more visible by clearing vegetation; or organising an event focusing on the cultural landscape. This can take place both outside and within built-up areas.

Grant applications can be submitted at any time of the year.

An application for a grant for work on or around a valuable cultural-historical landscape feature – such as restoration or making the feature more visible – consists of the following components:

  1. Description and rationale

    • A recent photograph of this valuable cultural and historical landscape feature.
    • A description of the work to be carried out, explaining how this work will contribute to the restoration or visibility of the valuable cultural-historical landscape feature.
    • If you are not the owner of the land on which the activities are to take place, you must enclose a letter of consent from the landowner with your application.

  2. Technical Specification and Budget

    • If you engage a company, you should include a quotation that specifies labour costs, material costs and VAT.
    • If you are going to carry out the work yourself, please enclose a technical description and a cost estimate for the maintenance work.

You may use the following documents to support your application:

An application for an activity aimed at enhancing the experience of the valuable historic cultural landscape consists of the following components:

  1. Description and rationale

    • A description of the location where the activity will take place.
    • A description of the experiential activity and the target audience.
    • A clear explanation of why this activity is in line with the objectives of an experiential activity under this scheme.
    • If you are not the owner of the land on which the activities are to take place, you must enclose a letter of consent from the landowner with your application.

  2. Budget

    • A budget with explanatory notes.
    • Quotation(s) itemised by labour costs, material costs and VAT.

All the eligibility criteria for this grant scheme can be found in the Heritage Fund Scheme 3.1 in Chapter 7.

Key conditions are:   

  • These activities contribute to Apeldoorn’s identity and visual quality by maintaining, improving or experiencing elements of the cultural-historical landscape.            
  • The activities take place within the municipality of Apeldoorn.
  • The activities must not be carried out before you have received a decision on your grant application.
  • No grant can be applied for in respect of routine maintenance
  • No grant can be applied for in respect of the hours worked by volunteers
  • Young landscape features (dating from the 1990s or later) are not eligible for this grant
  • You may apply for a grant under the Cultural Landscape scheme no more than once a year, and a grant will only be awarded once for the same activity.
  • The grant amounts to a maximum of 50% of the eligible costs. The maximum grant that may be awarded is €5,000. .
  • The initiative must be carried out within one year of the date on which the grant is awarded.

If your application is eligible for a grant, you will receive a provisional award.

You must submit an application for this grant within 8 weeks of the work/activities being carried out.

You can do this by submitting an application for a determination via the certification form.

Please attach the following documents to this application for a decision:

  • photos of the activity carried out;
  • invoices for the costs actually incurred;
  • proofs of payment.

On the basis of the form, the council will finalise the grant within 8 weeks and proceed with payment. If the project cannot go ahead or is not carried out in accordance with the specified conditions, the grant may be reduced or reclaimed.
