The council is working to make the city a pleasant place – a place to work, shop, live and spend time. It is doing this by focusing more on green spaces and water features, and by addressing traffic issues. Sensors are helping with this.
An explanation of what we are measuring in Apeldoorn.
In November 2022, 19 new sensors will be installed in Apeldoorn. Check the map to see exactly where they will be located.
The sensors measure various things:
The sensors never measure or store personal data. And, if you compare a sensor’s radiation to a Wi-Fi signal, it is equivalent to 4% of such a Wi-Fi signal.
More green spaces and water in the city help us to cope with climate change. Green spaces and water help to cool the city on hot days and ensure better drainage of rainwater. In Apeldoorn’s first ‘climate street’, the Marktstraat, we are fully committed to this. We are doing this in collaboration with local businesses, property owners, residents and the province of Gelderland.
Sensors measure whether the temperature is actually falling and whether the air is becoming cleaner as a result of the presence of greenery and water. This data can help to ensure that the right measures to tackle climate change are implemented across the rest of the city as well.
Traffic affects the appeal of the city centre. It is important that the city centre is easily accessible, but heavy traffic also leads to poorer air quality. To assess how clean (or polluted) the air is, five sensors have been installed. These are located on the outskirts of the city centre, on roads where cars, lorries and buses regularly pass. Using the data from the sensors, we can determine whether air quality needs to be improved. We can also see, for example, what impact electric buses have on air quality.
