The Rivierenkwartier was largely built in the 1960s. The neighbourhood has many terraced houses and blocks of flats. Around 2,900 people live there. Compared with the rest of Apeldoorn, there are slightly more single people and couples without children. Incomes are also slightly lower.
Many people enjoy living here. Relations with neighbours are often good. There are also plenty of local amenities nearby. For example, a shopping centre, a community centre, schools, Dok Zuid, a clothing bank and a day centre. And the Zuiderpark is just round the corner.
In the Rivierenkwartier, the number of people facing poverty and other difficulties is rising. Life can also be more challenging for older people at times. It is important to continue looking out for one another. And also: to organise the support that is needed. Organisations could work together even more effectively in this regard.
One of the residents’ main wishes is for more green spaces, more shade and more play areas. The first steps towards this have already been taken. It does, however, require careful thought, as space is also needed for things like parking spaces.
The area around the shopping centre and Dok Zuid is often very busy. This leads to parking problems and unsafe situations. The plan is to tackle this issue.
Residents also lack good public transport. As the bus runs only infrequently, people find it difficult to get around. This is also an issue in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Rivierenkwartier. That is why we are looking for a joint solution.
Together with local residents and a range of organisations, we will be tackling these and other issues. We have drawn up a plan of action setting out the steps we will be taking.
The following areas will receive extra attention in the coming years. First and foremost, we are working to improve social cohesion, so that people continue to meet and support one another. We are tackling issues relating to traffic and local facilities, such as parking problems. And we are working together to create more green spaces and more play areas.
